Vox Meetup This Saturday: Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincinnati, Ohio Vox Meetup

Do you live in or around Cincinnati, Ohio? If so, you're in luck because Scott and the Queen City Voxers Group have organized a Vox user meetup!

WHEN: This Saturday, July 12th

WHERE: Ault Park Playground. 3600 Observatory Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45208. "We'll look for each other at the playground marked by the red X below. If it's raining, head for the shelter to the north of the [red] X."

Ripe bananas? ...make banana bread. Naa, too much effort just to save
a few bananas.

A quicker solution: Smoothies!

Just peel and break up the bananas into a container and toss in the
freezer. Next morning, pop a few in the blender with any of the
following:

frozen berries
fresh fruit
yogurt (I buy the big bucket of vanilla
juice
etc.

Pro Tip: Be sure to have enough liquid in the blender to keep things
fluid.

Fragments from a "Staycation"-mind

People in the US are referring to this summer as the "staycation" since a mix of recession, high gas prices and a weak dollar means that most people are staying at home (one evidence is the bumper summer box office which seems to break even last year's stellar record).

I'm staying at home since traveling anywhere warm with two 6-month old babies is a bad idea (unless you feel really compelled to sit indoors most of the time which, in turn, begs the question of why you wanted to travel in the first place).

I'm keeping myself busy with the family and by ticking off things in the "To Do"-pile. One of these things is to create a new kind of presentation. The title I'm working on is "A kind of magic - The Tend Most Implausible Ideas for the Future and what it means for you". I'll be presenting this for the BBC in the UK in two weeks time. The basic idea is to find the most intriguing, compelling, life-altering scenarios and technologies that pose new and interesting questions about who we are as a species, as a civilization and as an individual. Scouring the work of Ray Kurzweil, Bruce Sterling, Cory Doctorow and others, I'm putting together a list of these ideas. Should make for some interesting discussions.

I'd like to reevaluate Mr John L Pedersen this week. Even though his book has an endorsement from Newt Gingrich and he claims, seemingly out of the blue, that he's one of "just 200 futurists in the world able to make a living", he does have some interesting ideas although none of them came across in last week's lecture in Stockholm. Check out the silly named "Important documents" section on his website and download the document "4 paths to 4 futures". Some interesting ideas indeed (and nice slides to "steal with pride" from).

An interesting article in (every blogger's favorite source) The New York Times, talks about Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck's research into releasing your inner potential (I cringe using that formulation). She believes that the answer may "lie in how people think about intelligence and talent. Those who believe they were born with all the smarts and gifts they're ever going to have approach life with a fixed mind-set. Thos who believe that their abilities can expand over time, however, live with a growth mind-set". The latter is interesting and reminiscient of fellow Swedish trendspotter Fredrik Härén's idea about developing vs developed countries, companies and people. Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald's, once said: "When you're green, you're growing. When you're ripe, you're not".

Unexpected System Error. Switch off the computer and restart it.

Passed a smashed-up computer monitor on the street today. It seemed to have taken a plunge from the six story building next to it. The result of PC-rage?
